There’s humor in these obstacles, sure, but they still thwart the freedom I expected as a magical hole. This means that the hole even contends with invisible walls, like a level which prevents it from moving underneath an inflatable swimming pool, or another where you need to unlock a door to be granted passage. Each level consists of a location with a few different vantages, and you just swallow everything up before being shuttled onward to the next screen. A campfire might make it spew flames, a catapult upgrade launches its contents into the air, and filling it with liquid might cause objects to bob along its surface.ĭespite these variations, I discovered numerous occasions where I wished for a little more agency in how I approached Donut County’s entropic tasks. In a series of episodic scenarios book-ended by irreverent narrative, you’ll swallow up the town and its residents with a moving hole in the ground, which grows larger and takes on certain qualities depending on what goes in. This means that any front-loaded promise as a puzzle game is a stretch there’s barely any challenge presented or brainpower required here, and while that subtracts any sense of hard-fought accomplishment, it doesn’t make the game any less fun to play. Also: plenty of holes, delivered fresh to your door by BK, the Donut County cafe’s very own minimum wage trash panda.ĭonut County’s tone is as weightless as its physics, but it’s a relentlessly charming and dreamlike diversion. A PBS documentary comes out later this year and the preview I saw was wonderful.Welcome to Hopper Springs, home of anthropomorphic animals, weightless mesas, and hollow earth conspiracies exposed. I can’t rave enough about this museum or the staff. It would be easy for a Hopper fan to plan a long weekend or a couple of days visiting these various sites and learning more about the artist (he was 6’7!). NYU maintains Hopper’s NYC studio, though it has recently been closed due to COVID. And even after this is over, the Whitney holds a huge Hopper collection on view regularly. The Whitney has an extensive Hopper exhibit on view through March 5, 2023. Nyack is a very walkable downtown, and the house is near many shops and restaurants.Įntry fee is reasonable. There is also a map and QR code to lead you around Hopper’s Nyack, where you can see places important to him and places he painted. The info boards are clean, clear, and concise. I could sense the passion they felt about the subject. The staff here are so enthusiastic, kind, and knowledgeable. There are also works by his wife, Jo, who was a major influence on his career, and a key to his success. You can view his bedroom, arranged as he would have had it, with an inspiring view of the Hudson. Many personal artifacts are on view, including journals and painting/tool kits. The museum boasts many early boyhood sketches. It was in danger of demolition until the village worked to collectively buy and restore the property. This home was built and owned by Hopper’s maternal grandparents. Located about 15 miles (a 35-50 minute commute) from Manhattan, it would make for a great half day or full day trip from the city! This is a sparkling hidden gem, tucked away in Edward Hopper’s birthplace, the village of Nyack.
